TEARS OF A SOLDIER

I would like to say Thanks to my brothers in battle.
Your life will not be forgotten.
You are with me wherever I am,
I now know that you are sitting in the promise land.
You are now allowed to rest,
Because you have done your best!
As I now show you some respect.
You know, I will never allow them to forget.

INTRODUCTION
As a Soldier in the Vietnam War, I saw a lot of death and horror, there are things I saw, you really don’t want to know about. But what I saw the most of was death, there was lots off it, sometimes, that’s all there was. I cannot say that I am proud of what I had to do for you.
I was a Soldier, that’s all
Soldiers kill and they die. It was not for us to question why.
I have written these poems to remind you who it was that died for you. A SOLDIER

I HAVE DONE MY TIME
THE OATH
I was only 17 when I raised my hand,
I took an oath to protect this land.
When I turned 18, I was sent to war
Trying to understand what it was for.
They told me it was to protect my rights,
For that I had to fight.
For me to be true,
I thought it was the right thing for me to do.
As I climbed over the mountain, and took the hill,
I surely did it of my own free will.
There I saw death face to face,
There it was, all over the place.
Little did I know what I would do?
Would cause me, to be judged, by you!
We were the best that you could get,
Yet you treated us with no respect.
Today I cannot stand free,
It is because of the monster in me.
To many years, to many tears,
I cannot forget after all these years.
AS A SOLDIER
I was only a soldier that done the duty,
Now I am only asking for what’s due to me.
I spend a year in a War,
Now I spend a life asking myself what was I fighting for?
As a Soldier I killed in your name,
Now I’m the one feeling all the shame.
We had to do our best,
But when we got home we got no respect.
I am not asking you to wear my shoes,
I just telling you I’ve paid my dues.
As a Soldier we fought in wars,
Yet we still don’t know what we were fighting for.
To be a soldier was a hard thing to do,
There was a lot of hell we were put through.
What we had to endure,
You’ll never know I am sure.
FIRST TO FIGHT
We were first to fight,
When it came to what was right.
It was a life we had to choose,
When we went in, we knew we would lose.
I walked with my rifle in hand,
Watching over, this fair land!
A land that, I gave my life for.
The same land, as where you are.
I was young when I went to war.
At 63, still don’t know what we were fighting for.
All I know was my orders to kill,
That’s what had to be done to take that hill.
Soon my time will come,
I need to do now what must be done.
There are stories I have to tell.
I need to free myself, or I am bound for hell.
IN HEAVEN
I sit and look over the hill,
I would ride over it, if I had the will.
I was young I could ride my horse all day,
Back then had no one to stand in my way.
Things has changed and I have slowed down,
Sometimes it’s hard for me to get around.
I am old as the trees,
Yet, I have never had the life I pleased.
As I grow older and time passed me by,
I had never stopped to wonder why.
Only in my head, is my memory,
Sure glad he was standing there for me.
I was a soldier, who died in war,
At 18, I did not know what I was fighting for.
I was only doing my job,
Why, oh why, did I have to die?
LOST SOULS
Here I sit in my rocking chair,
Looking out my window and no one is there.
You said that you would be there for me,
Yet there is no one as far as I can see.
I have gotten tried and old
Now, I am trying to find my soul
Little did I know?
It was not my time to go
For you I gave my life,
For you I done what I thought was right.
I am sorry if I let you down,
Yet, why am I the one wearing this frown?
As Soldiers we were friends,
We knew where we were and what we were in.
It was for you that we did what we had too,
Why is it that you could not be true?
When my tour was done,
I came home and had to run.
I could not fight no more,
Because you had closed that door!
HEROES
Where have all the heroes gone,
To the heavens where they belong?
Their hearts were true.
It was for you they did what they had to do.
Though it may have cost them their lives,
They did it for the kids and the wife’s.
They only did what they had to do,
It was all just to protect me and you.
They died for the fathers, and the mothers,
For the word freedom, they died for all others.
At 18 they lost their lives and their dreams,
Sure seems to me, we cannot forget them it seems.
Can you still see the faces?
Can you remember all the places?
Where the soldiers died,
Where the soldiers gave their lives?
TEARS OF WAR
There were many tears of war
Who knew what we were fighting for?
We were boys sent to act like men,
Why were we accused of a sin?
I was 17 when I walked into a man’s shoes
Hell I could not even by booze.
I was too young to vote
Yet you sent me were someone could cut my throat.
You sit here in your free world,
Maybe you should give soldiering, a whirl?
Let’s see what you have in you,
Try doing what we choose to do?
It took men like me,
We were the ones that kept you free,
Many men had died,
Many mothers still have to cry.
It is your tears
That keeps us alive all these years
As we sit under this big Oak tree
I cannot help but to wonder if you still remember me.
MY LAST TEAR
Your tears help free your soul,
This world has surely taken its toll.
My tears fill the seas,
You will become part of me.
As a man I was free to choose what I was to be,
At that time soldiering sounded good to me.
Little did I know?
That it would be my time to go.
When I left the states,
I knew them that I had to do whatever it takes.
For you I became a man at 18.
How did I know that time would end my dream?
I have cried till my eyes run dry.
No more tears, now that I have died
Still I do not know why.
So many had to give their lives?
WALL OF TEARS
I am sadden by what I see,
You claim to have built a wall for me.
You put my name up high, for the entire world to see,
Is it your soul you are trying to free?
All wars has it heroes,
Man that were not afraid to step on toes.
When we left we knew we might not be back,
We had already come to terms with that.
We were boys, right out of school,
Now a gun was our tool.
We learned to fight,
We had to do what was right.
Now after all these years,
You have built a wall of tears.
It is now a place to rest,
To get here you had to be the best of the best.
But, it has been so long
A lot of time has come and gone
It surely would be ashamed
If you have forgotten my name!
I HAVE DONE MY TIME
I now sit in my rocking chair,
It is now known that I have done my share.
See, it is now for you to judge me,
I know I was the best that I could be.
I am much too old to take another stroll,
It is time for me to relax, I am being told
But as you can see?
I am not finish becoming me.
I was first to fight,
Did not matter if it was day or night!
I did what I had to do.
Too prove I was just like you.
Now I’ll stand for you to see,
Just how will, you judge me?
But in the end it will come to be,
I have always just been me.
I was a Soldier that had a job to do,
It was me doing what I had to do.
Maybe somehow I can set you free,
I’m now trying to forgive you, for disrespecting me.
Old Soldier never die, they just float off into the Sky.
I now salute you Soldier.
For this I can do, because I was one of you
